...for the greater good/health of planet? What do we do about people that complain about losing trivial freedoms for the greater good/health of planet.

The folks that wont even stop using an electric can-opener to save a billion barrells of oil a year. I want more mandates from this government to protect the enviroment, water, and air.. Bring on the mandates because I would rather be able to catch and eat clean fish and breathe clean air then have the luxury of using a clothes dryer ( I hang dry ) or an electric can-opener.. These stubborn idiots that cry foul over losing freedoms bring us all down and make the air we breathe dirtier and this is fact. When will this gov use some common sense and just make these laws..

So what you are saying is that it's ok for me to want the government to take away some of your freedoms if I don't approve of your behavior. That is called tyranny, nice, deTocqueville predicted that this is the way that Democracy in America would fall. With a constant series of small freedoms being taken away. I'm sure that you and I have differing views on unacceptable behavior, but if you will accept quid pro quo and allow restrictions on behaviors that people you disagree with think are unacceptable, than I guess it's ok with me.

By the way, I am a graduate student in Environmental Engineering, right now my laundry is out on the line but you know there are weeks at a time in the winter where it's impractical. Furthermore you might want to ban the use of air conditioning, but many elderly die during heat waves, denying the elderly the use of air conditioning during a heat wave is more than the loss of a trivial freedom if people die. And that's the problem with your position, you probably are happy to hide behind the Constitution when it suits you, but you are willing to ignore it when it doesn't fit your needs. Oh and by the way, if you want to talk about a waste of electricity, I would argue that TVs, personal computers and the personal use of the Internet are totally unnecessary and you might consider starting by banning them.

I would venture that most people disagree with you. This is going into tree hugger territory. Electric can openers are the target of this question? Not to mention there is no way that American use of electric can openers uses a billion barrels of oil a year... it is electric, not gas!
