What is the best type of hiking backpack for extremely long hikes?

I am thinking about getting a new pack for my husband as a surprise for his birthday. I don't really know too much about the difference between the different types. What do you think? Looking for answers from people who actually have experience.

Choosing a backpack is like choosing a pair of shoes.
The only person who knows if they fit right is the person trying them on.
So, this is only a suggestion, but you could ask him his opinion on packs
or ask him which one he likes best.
Otherwise, I can assure you he "WILL" return it and get the one he wants.
