So I have this story idea I came up with that is VERY VERY under construction. It's sort of inspired by The Cider House Rules if you want an idea.
THE PLOT: a city boy works on a peach farm out in the middle of nowhere for a month. Whilst there he realizes picking peaches is a lot of work, but he also becomes good friends with some of the guys there and falls for the daughter of the owner. The peach owner initially likes the guy but when he finds out the guy and the daughter have fallen in love, he starts to hate him. This is mostly because the daughter will inherit the farm when her father can't run it anymore, but she wants to follow her own dreams, and this guy gets in the way of what the owner wants.
I have a lot of scattered plot ideas and characters that I want in the story, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the main character, which is kind of preventing me from going any further. I have no idea what I want his personality to be like nor why he has to go work on the peach farm, but I have established that he is a musician, he is in college, and he has to go because he HAS to, not because he wants to. My first idea was that he's starting to become reckless (i.e. drinking and letting himself go, not caring about anything, being a d*ck), and his concerned best friend forces him to go as an unofficial rehab. I still don't know about this idea though...
So what do you think the main character's personality should be like, and what should be his reason for working on the farm? Any ideas or forms of advice are welcome. If it helps, I plan to make the daughter spunky and drill sergeant-like, and I want them to butt heads at first.
Sorry this is so long!! Thanks if you answer
