figuratively (jokes, idioms, etc.)? Fluent speech isn't affected, but the patient becomes literal minded due to damage of the brain where figurative thoughts such as idioms, jokes, humor, metaphors, etc.. is processed.

What type of aphasia is this?

Right sided aphasia

The type of difficulty you are describing usually results from damage to the right side of the brain, while other types of aphasia result from damage to the left side of the brain. Those with damage to the right side of the brain also may have difficulty stating the main point of a story, even though they can remember the details. They sometimes also have difficulty "reading" the unstated emotions of others or even showing socially accepted expressions of emotion. I hope that this helps.
