What's a good camera to upgrade to from a Canon Rebel XT?

I am not a professional so I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I definitely want to upgrade to something a little nicer. I was thinking of maybe going with the Canon 40D. Any suggestions? I really want to take my photography to the next level if you know what I mean.
