Hey there, I was wondering what would be a good martial art for a big fat guy I'm 6ft 2" and have a 48" waist so yeah big! so what would be a good martial art to get into that works with my size? I want to get toned and fit but I don't really wan't to loose my size too much I like being big :)

All comments welcome, even the negative ones

Thanks

Taekwon-do, It is a really good martial art for fitness, not only that but because of your size you'd be good for sparring.

You dont sound big to me If you got into mma you would be fighting as a heavyweight and your oppenents will be 6ft6 265lbs <thats what you call big however you could lose some body fat and tone up and drop to light heavyweight having fat is useless, muscle and fat are two differnt things and people who think that you can turn fat into muscle are wrong they are two differnt tissues

If your inclined to wrestle its Judo all the way. If you like striking then Karate (although judo is actually karate, Karate= Empty hand) If you like both then M.M.A. Judo is more taxing on the body than standard Karate ( Shotokan, Goju-ryu, kenpo,Kung-Fu=Chines karate ext....) to name a few of the better known styles. In any good Judo class the first few weeks is spent deliberately throwing yourself to the floor learning to fall. Then you reach the higher levels of expertise you learn how not to fall ( turnouts) Judo lends itself well though to those of us with shall we say a larger center of gravity..

The same martial arts I'd say a little guy can do any of them, just find a good school , with good instructor(s) friendly students and it's not a requirement but always a bonus affordable pricing,

One idea might be to check out several different schools(doesn't matter if they're each a different system), judge the quality of instruction the atmosphere in the class, whethter or not it's got the right level of physical activity for you to handle ,and like I said friendly students and instructor(s),also see if they have a free trial class where you can take part for free, then after ask yourself three questions No.1 did I get pushed ?No.2 did I enjoy myself ?and No.3 is this something I'd like to commit to? it's also good to ask more other student questions about the school and ask the instructors as well so you can really know before you make a decision

BUT DO NOT , I REPEAT DO NOT GO TO A SCHOOL THAT PROMISES TO MAKE YOU A BLACKBELT IN A MATTER OF WEEKS, this school is more than likely a McDojo which is just trying to maximise it's profits by making false claims to it's students

a lot fo big guys i know do bjj in my school. the part that comes into play with bjj and big guys is weighing your opponent down with your weight. and if you have nice speed you can transition positions without the guy trying to leg hook you or any of that garbage. he will most likely go for trying to get himself out of all this pressure. anyways the fight ends with a submission. the only flaw with big guys is the flexibility but that will come overtime.
