whats the best free virus protection available to download off the internet?

My virsus protection expired on my computer. Is there any free protection that anyone could recommend I download off the internet.
 
Stay away from AVG. People who push AVG on here are either clueless or Virus writers. AVG free is about as sorry a AV there ever was next to Trend Micro. Why in the world would anyone want a Anti Virus program that doesn't have real time protection is beyond me. If free is the very best you can do go with AVIRA. Avast has real time protection. But it is weak. With a 74% Protection rate it can't be anything else but weak.
