What's up with the hand gesture when people on motor bikes pass each other?

I see people do this all the time when they are on motor bikes, is it like a salute or something?
 
It is an acknowledgment from one rider to another, a greeting reserved for another motorcyclist.
 
Yeah sort of.
It's just a greeting from one road enthusiast to another.
 
Just two people enjoying the day and acknowledging the fact to each other. Nothing more; nothing less.

And if one is pointing down with his index finger that means there is a cop just over the crest of the next hill.
