spits them out (most of them)? In Hollywood, people who become celebrities are usually put on a pedestal (of varying heights). Then, for a lot of them, they're brought down and usually never heard from again.

I think this happens because the Hollywood industry (movies and TV) is so big, that it's impersonal and they take what they need from you and then kick you to the curb. There are numerous projects going on, and it's easy for the industry to find fresh young talent who want to be stars. But, there's no guarantee for long term security, so I think a lot of these young hopefuls get used by Hollywood and left to fend for themselves after that. A few of course (the lucky ones) do manage to maintain a career in Hollywood after they break in, but I imagine it's very hard to do so and competitive. I think it's why so many women in Hollywood get plastic surgery in order to stay competitive, and also it explains why there are different classes of celebrity (A-level is the elite of Hollywood, B-level have a career but they're on a lower level and not as prestigious). Also, it explains why they have the term "The It Girl" (to describe the young female who takes the reigns of being the hottest female celebrity for the time being).

Again, I think the industry is set up in this way because of it's enormous size. Actually a lot of companies and organizations work that way - when they're smaller, they retain the humanness and treat people decently. But, at a certain point they grow large enough in size that it becomes impersonal and that's when people get hurt and treated unfairly - look at large companies in business, and other industries like the Fashion industry (churning out models in the same way).

So, my question is - are there people at the top who actually control the Hollywood machine? Or, is it a headless top and it's just the size of the industry itself that keeps the machine running in this way?
