Why are there so few practioners of Chinese martial arts competing in MMA?

sanda/sanshou wing chun baguazhang xingyi and several other forms of kung fu have become popular in mma just not that popular.sanda is wat kung le was the champ at and sanda is freestyle boxing but anyways ik 4 a fact these arts r great 4 competitive fights not full of deadly techniques just specific fighting styles.and chinese martial arts arent as common as others in the americas really where most ufc and other high dollar mma fighters r normally from us r brazil 4 the majority but alot of the chinese martial arts r great 4 mma just the instructors r rarer than muay thai and boxing instructors in the americas

Some techniques of ancient or some modern asian martial arts might kill or break bones so they forbid those techniques into the ring. If your dumb enough to get disqualified then use them if you can.

There are plenty in China. MMA is a growing quickly in popularity in China. It apparently is not too deadly there...

Good question. I've been thinking about that too.

I believe it's mainly because of the rule set and circumstances of MMA. For instance, you fight one on one without weapons in a closed area, which typically gives an edge to grappling arts like wrestling and BJJ rather than more striking oriented arts like wing chun or shaolin kung fu. As for striking, I think muay thai is many mixed martial artists' main art because it's so useful in the clinch, which is where you tend to end up sooner or later in an MMA fight.

I would also guess it's to do with the fact that many MMA fighters come from Western countries like the US, and they often have their background in sports which are popular in the West, like wrestling and kickboxing, rather than Chinese arts.

In some cases I think it's about the training methods too. For instance, muay thai is well-known for its brutal sparring, and I think that's part of the reason why it's so popular with MMA fighters who go "all in" in the octagon. A gentle and refined Chinese art like Tai Chi would certainly be less useful under these circumstances.
