Why can't black people swim?

Last week all the seniors in our class went to Myrtle Beach. We are about half white and half black, all in all about 40 of us. When we got to the pool, not a single black person would get in. We were there for a week, and during that whole time, I never saw a single one of them get wet. When we were all horsing around throwing each other in the water, they all left, and one black girl almost had a fit when my friend pretended like he would throw her in. I didn't want to ask them, because they take it the wrong way. I asked my mom and she says they are missing a bone in their ankle that helps with swimming. I don't think that is true, but there must be some explanation.
