Why can't i get my Home Theatre system to work on my television?..?

My surround system works well when i play dvd's and music. However, when i try to use my surround sound with my tv, i only get sound from one speaker. Why is that?
 
Connect optical cable or composite cables ( red & white ) from cable box or TV to Home Theater System for audio.
