Why do bicyclists and bike racers wear those stupid bike shorts without underwear ?

My son is bike racer and refuses to wear cotton underwear in those stupid spandex bike shorts. He wears them exposing every curve and stain from his body. What should I do force him to wear underwear or is he right and I am in the wrong ? How do you wear them and why ?
 
It has a built pads that serves as undies, in long rides if you will wear briefs, you will find pain on the testicles because of the brief linings and garters.
 
They are most times black so they don't show stains. Sweat salts may show as "stains" but rarely. Wearing cotton is a killer. When he is on the bike not much shows.

So, if he limits wearing them to bike rides, be happy you raised a smart son.

Why you wear them is for comfort on the saddle. They are even more sanitary as the don't hold moisture needed for bacterial growth.
