Why do dvd's that I have burned will not play?

I have burned several movies on dvd's and some of them play in my dvd player and others it says disc error. I checked the ones that say disc error and they play fine on the pc. Any suggestions?
They are all AVI and like I said, some play and some don't.
 
Your DVD player doesn't support format in which that video(s) is encoded.
Some common format is .avi .mpg .wmv .mp4 .mkv
Make sure that you read (usually written on DVD player itself) what it supports and then encode all movies in that format (use Handbrake application for encoding, it is great) and then burn them to DVD.
