Why do more intelligent people play and watch soccer then contact football

(rugby, gridiron)? soccer players aren't generally known as meat heads but other more contact forms of Football, and long behold, the players are meat heads...yet it seems to me that soccer is by far the more simpler game then the others. the rules are far less and their aren't any intricate rules like in rugby...why is this?
