Why do people feel that celebs are demi-gods who are above the law?

Yes, celebs do get away with more than the average person but they are still human. When they do make mistakes that if anyone else committed them, people would say how terrible they were, if the celeb commits them, they turn a blind eye and say "oh he won't do it again and it really wasn't that bad". In the rare case that a celeb commits a crime and gets caught and made to pay the price for it, not only do people turn a blind eye but they also say the celeb is being treated unfairly.

Yes, the fact that they are human means they will make mistakes. But when they break the law and are caught, why do people feel they should be given a second chance when that wouldn't be the case at all with the average Joe on the street? Do people not realize how damaging and scary celebrity worship really is?
