Why do people let their cats outside then complain when they get sick or injured?

Why do people drive cars and then complain when they get in accidents? Bad things happen in life, of course people are going to complain when something bad happens.

I think most people who let their cats outside make the choice of quality of life over safety and length of life. I personally keep my cats inside and they seem happy to me, but it's their choice to make. I'm okay with it as long as they take all possible responsibility such as spaying and neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, and of course, taking the cat to the vet promptly if something happens, whether it's night or day. Keeping them inside at night when wild nocturnal animals is helpful, also.

But I know what you mean, I get kind of frustrated when people describe cats that have had horrendous injuries or are really ill and they "have no money" to go to a vet. If you have no money, you should probably not have a cat, but if you do, it would certainly make sense to keep it inside and out of harm's way!

cats should be outside they are way to active to be inside they should always have a play time for outside....you don't stay in the house all the time do you? with no internet phone or anything just imagine sitting there with nothing to do....cats will get outside and get injured thats life.

I complain about the cost of the VET, not that they get sick and injured! I had to take one cat to the vet yesterday for a scorpion sting (yes, we have scorpions around here!) and the exam, a "double dose" of steroids, and an antibiotic cost me $92 !! Tonight, I have one of my OTHER cats with a half-swollen face with an injury. She's not as bad as the other one was, so I will keep my eye on her.

Earlier this week, we found one of the "outdoor cats" dead on the road, too! It was one of our "nameless" outdoor/feral cats, but still, it happens. And "Papa" cat has been limping for almost a week now... again, the outdoor/feral cats.

What I can help with, I do. What I can't I can only let nature take its course.

But cats can get sick and injured being INSIDE cats, too. I had 2 get sick and DIE after they did not "react" well to being anesthetized to have them groomed. I've had my indoor cats get sick, injured as well as the outdoor ones.

It's like having children. Children get sick and injured ALL the time, it's part of their lives. But would we give up our children? NO! Do we COMPLAIN about their illnesses and injuries? Heck YEAH!

But it is NOT "obvious," and I wish you would stop making such a generalization. Yes, indoor cats live longer and get sick less, but we ALL have a right to complain about whatever we want to complain about.

I made that last part up myself. – Thumper

Whoa; slow the train there, Sparky.

I have two indoor/outdoor cats and both have been injured as a result. I did not come here and complain about it. I merely keep $300 in my desk drawer and drive them to the vets when they require attention. And most other outdoor owners do not complain either. They come onto this sight to ask for advice and are treated rudely by you and yours whilst you use this site as your personal soapbox instead of helping them. And that was not YAHOO's intent when they invited you here ............. was it ? ?

they think that even though outdoor cats have more health problems than indoor cats it won't happen to their cat. It's the thinking of it won't happen to me.

Personally, I don't let my cat out because like you, I know that it WILL get injured or sick somehow, some time. Every single person I know who has had 'outside' cats, has had something happen to them...usually, it's that the cat got run over by a car. I know three that had their cats killed by what I assume were street-walking sadists, and a couple just never came back.

I think that a big reason why people let their cats out, is that they feel a sense of guilt if they confine their cat to the house. Especially if their cat does what mine does, and that's watch the world through the window and occasionally try to escape. I put my cat in a harness on a six metre leash in the garden for an hour every day and he's one happy cat. Monitored, of course. But other people aren't as realistic as that and assume that their cat is special and thus won't get run over, killed, poisoned, lost, stolen or sick in general.

My big fat tom cat used to be an outside cat and he never got hurt or sick. He was an outside cat because he wanted to explore the outside world and use his natural instincts. Plus he was more active back then and wanted to run and be fit. Now a days we just let him outside without a leash for a few minutes so he can feel the wind in his fur and eat grass then we take him inside.
I don't think I would complain if he got hurt. I'd be sad that it happened but I wouldn't complain about it.
