...hang out with you to find out? Stuff like, what do you look like, what to do you do for fun, what are your interests, what kind of guys/girls do you like?

If they actually hung out with you then they would know, or be able to see, or observe, or find out.

people just say it too see what they like and so they get to like them and be that person they like that's kinda why
