why do people who drive small expensive cars tailgate people driving large SUVs...

...and trucks? if the driver they are tailgating stops, theyl slam right into them, and the front of their car will be ruined
 
Some of them are trying to "draft" or slipstream behind them. For public road purposes, drafting is tailgating a larger vehicle in front of you to reduce the wind resistance & drag on the vehicle. Basically, it allows the smaller vehicle to increase MPG (though not by a whole lot) and requires less engine power to maintain the vehicle's current speed. Its extremely common in auto racing. Obviously, as you suggested, the risks easily outweight the benefits when it comes to using such techniques on the freeway, so you really should not do it.
 
I drive a lexus and I had 2 suvs tailgating me in 1 day...And I had kids in my backseat...Tell me this, why do people who drive suvs take up 2 parking spaces?
 
Anyone who tailgates is an idiot, regardless of what kind of car they're driving or the type of car in front of them. Tailgating is an excellent idiot-detector. It's dangerous, pointless, risky, and stupid.
