Why do religious people 'boast' about their religion on social networking sites?

I have friends who are religious, and many of them quote the bible and other holy books on their status updates, thank God for giving them stuff etc. It's almost like boasting. It's boadering on self righteous.

Why do they do it, and does it fit in with religious values?
 
Because for many of us, we put God as the center of our lives so naturally we will talk about it a lot. I'm sure the majority don't mean to sound like they are boasting or are self righteous. Why does it bother you so much?
 
Yes, I have a couple who do that on my facebook. It really makes me pity them, that they believe that drivel and live their lives under the thumb of a religion that keeps them in fear.
 
It all depends on their reasons for doing so. Are they proselytizing? Are they giving thanks? It matters deeply.
It certainly has the possibility of becoming self-righteous. However, only God can be judge of that matter.
 
Many see themselves as members of a very exclusive club. They're bragging about what they perceive as status.
 
It's entirely illogical, because they are opening themselves to ridicule by non-zealots and by counter-arguments from scripture from within their own bibles. And there are plenty of contradictions in the bible.
 
Not that long ago, people declared their political affiliation (Republican, Democrat, Whig...) and religious affiliation. Obituaries often carried this information.

The trend toward praising and thanking God is a personal thing that on-line communities allow them to do without some naysayer coming along and telling them to stick it. The anonymous nature of the internet has caused many of them to "come out of the closet" and declare their religious convictions.

You see some of it in this forum, as well.
