Why does every African American on American Idol have a sad story to tell?

Not a racist stab... But. It seems like every African American that they interview on American idol has something sad to say. e.g. "it was tough growing up". "my kids go without dinner some nights". Is it just a media thing or are these people legitimately struggling through life?

I'm sure some are actually having a hard time but I'm betting that most are just saying those things to get the sympathy vote. And it's not just the African Americans, white people do it to. Remember Kelly Pickler....my mom left me, dad's in jail.

Not that race matters but the sob stories I heard (this season) came mostly from whites.
The percentage of aspiring singers facing life challenges is probably the same as the rest of the popullation.
