Why does OWS have to stay the night?

The LA Times reports that the occupy LA is costing the city money, as costly damage is being caused by occupy protesters who stay overnight:

Wouldn't this movement gain much more respect if none of the above happened? Wouldn't people support them more if they went home at night and didn't cost cities extra money? I have friends who are cops in Southern California, and they're getting all kinds of overtime.

Homeles who used to occupy these parks don't have a place to stay any longer, and local small business owners are losing revenue as well, because no one wants to go there to shop.
Charles, the Constitution does not prohibit cities from having curfews and establishing ordinances that protect sanitation.

They have the right to assemble, yes, but the curfew laws and sanitation laws are also constitutional. If these were tea partiers, you wouldn't defend their right to say overnight on parks while causing damage to trees and grass as the LA times reports.

Don't be a double-standard liberal. Liberals care about the environment when it's convenient. Liberals believe in a civil society where laws are obeyed, but only at their convenience.
Bruce, I'm all for the city granting permits, but Occupy is not offering to pay for permits like the example you mentioned.

And what about the street vendors who paid money and taxes to do business there? When can they get their spots back?

1st Amendment to the US Constitution

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If OWS wants to be accepted by middle America, it needs to convert to a protest where people go home at night. That would keep the trouble causers out. If middle America sees OWS as a threat. OWS will accomplish nothing.

They stay the night because they are citizens of the United States and thus, have a right to free speech and assembly. They are upholding their constitutionally mandated rights, and as such, should be commended.

Actually, the homeless can just join in since they apparently dress similarly... What they call 'protest', we called CAMPING when I was a kid!

It is their constitutional right to peaceably assemble for redress of grievances. I have seen entire streets and parks closed and extra police assigned for movie filming and street festivals. Why can't the city grant a special permit for them to stay in a park? They could charge the cost of cleanup to the permit-holders.

Dechu, wrong. Idiotic paraphrasing of portions of the constitution gains you nothing. There have ALWAYS been reasonable restrictions on free speech. they are destroying public areas that will need to be repaired when this is over, on my dime.

Keep your ignorant fat fingers in your ears and keep bleating "first amendment", can't you see that they would GAIN support by acting like they are not hooligans?

I would have to walk in their shoes to understand it, really.
