Why, in a vehicle (car, SUV, pickup truck, etc.), is there no "record"...?

...capability to record something off the radio?
I mean to record off the typical radio, factory installed. Think of before satellite radio, etc. Forever, it's not been possible to record off the factory-installed radio. Is it done to keep people from avoiding listening to radio broadcasts, because they recorded a favorite off the radio previously and keep playing it?
 
It's to keep you from messing with the radio when you should be paying attention to your driving. If people can't even talk on the phone & drive, how can you expect them to drive & operate a recorder ?? There'd be dead bodies all OVER the place !!!
