Why is australia so against a few boat people entering it's country?

I friend of mine actually went to one of their internment camps to bring toys to the children. Children are actually committing suicide in there.
@Kaboosh: This same friend has survived several months in Iran as an unmarried non-Muslim American woman.
 
They as i know happen to be Afghans and Sri lankan tamils who are fleeing persecution in their lands. Would there have been any controversy if these people happened to be Europeans?

Ireland been a very small place when compared to the vastness of australia , ireland takes in more refugees than other countries
 
And how many of them are you inviting to live in your house, where you'll pay to take care of them for the next 50 years? How racist does it make YOU if you won't do it?
 
Yeah, try taking a boat to Iran, if you are not muslim they would slice off your head.
 
Cowards flee persecution; strong people fight it. No group has the right to place their survival in the hands (and at the expense) of another people! This is a corollary of the simple rule: You get the government you deserve! (USA may be waking up to that even now!)
 
the thing with illgal aliens isn't a humanitarian/moral issue, its an economical issue. The citizens are paying taxes while the illigals don't, those taxes go to improve the lives of the illigal people, and not to mention the aliens could take jobs of the citizens(in which case they do pay taxes)
and there wouldn't be controversy because the entire western europe is one big-arse trading bloc with the same currencey!
