Why is religion so important in US politics?

Isn't that a personal thing? Isn't there suppose to be a seperation of Church and State?
 
There is a separation, but people vote with their ideologies, not on issues, most of the time.
 
You can trust a man who believes in something greater than mankind or it's ideas.
 
Religion should get out of the way of all human affairs.

Religion is a primitive thought pattern and should be discarded and replaced with logical and pragmatic thought.

Religion has no place in the modern world.
 
Yes, but people link their ideal policies to their morals which are often linked to religion...I think it's very sad though how all candidates seem to have to express their particular brand of Christianity and otherwise they wouldn't get elected
