Why people join a religion that has specific burial laws.?

My mother-in-law died this week. Her live-in boyfriend claims to be Muslim and that she was also and wanted her buried as such. There was no money to bury her at all. The kids couldn't come up with the $15,000 to do this and ended up having to cremate her. This decision was agonizing for the kids and they will always have guilt over it. And are having to deal with the Muslim friends of the mother's about what terrible children they were because of it. Do they really believe that their higher power decides their fate on the actions of how others take care of the body? Don't they also teach that your fate is based on the way you treat others and the good you do while here? Wouldn't intentionally putting that stress and pain on the survivors count pretty big in the "Con List"?
This even went so far as the kids being called to the hospital in the middle of the night because someone (the boyfriend) was there trying to take the body from the morgue! He didn't get it as there was no legal Power of Attorney, but it took even more time and pain and stress until the hospital confirmed this and he had "brothers" from his church there helping and supporting his actions!
