Will driving in d3 mess up my 96 Honda accord?

Yesterday while driving my car started pulling and reving..my mom said I needed oil so I put it in and it stoped alot....it only did it a little while going home...I just pulled into school 10 min from home(freeway) and it started doing it bad...people are saying it could be the vss sensor...which I have no idea what that is....buuuuut I have no money right now to fix it...so is it bad to continue driving it or will I mess it up more? And also I had the whole flashibg d4 light before and a machanic said to drive in d3...but another machanic said its bad...is it?

Its ok to drive it in D3.. You just wont go to 4th gear (overdrive). Its better to stay around town since driving in D3 will not give you the best MPG on the highway. And IIRC you wont get past 60 in D3 (not sure about this).
