Will they truly hold AIG accountable or is this just for show and politics as usual

They (AIG et al) will only be forced to be held accountable when the public pressure is on..and doesn't stop.
That feeds up the chain...from the average Jane on the street, to the media, to the government officials (local and then state and then federal).

You got it. If they wanted to hold them accountable, they would not have rushed legislation through, without giving anyone time to read it.

It is a show.

There isn't a way that congress can force AIG executives to give back or tax the bonuses, and AIG can get in legal trouble for NOT giving them (not honoring a contract). If they try anything,it will be overturned by the courts. You can't make a law, especially a retroactive law, against a specific person or company.

Bonuses unpopular with you and millions of others.
Politicians posture.
People have short memories.

Exactly...this was all planned...

They are taking us for fools

They knew about these bonus contracts for a year.

They are all of a sudden outraged?

Come on people...WAKE UP!!!! WILL YOU PLEASE?

The government IS the problem.

What we do know is that the public is outraged because their leaders in Washington DC are telling them that they should be, and that the political response is as phony as can be.

How is this a new day in Washington? This is an administration and Congress that appears to be stoking populist anger for political gain. The problem is that this has proven to be a very dangerous and unpredictable gambit, kind of like keeping a Bengal tiger in your apartment. You never know when it turns on you.
