Would a volvo s40 be a good choice for a family car... safety wise and all?

I only have one child, so backseat space is not that much of an issue.
I was also thinking of a Mercury Milan... Which would be best?
I am also considering an Audi A4, but that would probably be last on my list... unless, of course, it is safer than the other 2 i listed.
