Would it be bad to use a handheld vacuum to get rid of mouse droppings in the home?

I've read that you shouldn't vacuum mouse dropping because it can allow germs to become airborne. But the thought of sweeping up mouse turds make me wanna wretch. Would using a handheld vacuum be any safer? Handhelds don't seem to kick out air as much as upright vacuums do. Then I'd throw away the hand held.
