would it be possible to play movies from an external hardrive to a dvd player?

Could I burn a backup copy of all my dvds onto an external harddrive, and plug the harddrive into a usb port on a dvd player, or blue ray player and watch them that way? Or could I just plug a thumb drive into the usb port on a player?

You'd have to have a software to rip your DVD's.

I don't think you can just plug your harddrive into your DVD player and play it that way.
