Xbox live-Is putting in a valid phone number important?

Hey everyone, just wanted to know if it was of any importance to have put a valid phone number in for xbox live. I tried doing a fake one and it accepted it but I didn't actually start xbox live from that point. So I thought I'd ask.

So, is it of any importance?
