Are home theater speakers able to connect to any av source and work?

Like the connectors/inputs on the speakers, are they universal like Hdmi cables or 3.5mm headphone connectors?

The woofer that my speakers plugged into broke, but I was wondering if I can salvage the speakers. The inputs have 6 receiving holes at the ends; I don't know if these are specifically designed to work with the system, or I can just go buy a AV receiver/woofer and use the same speakers.
 
These speakers were sold in a set. Any hookups between sub and satellite is what ever the designer of the system pulled out of his butt.

The woofer strips out the low frequency signals sends the small speakers only the high frequencies. If you hook the small speakers up directly to a receiver and send bass to them it may damage them, or they may work fine, if you re-use them i would turn down the bass to them.

You cant go out and buy just a woofer to hook up, they will be sold as a package with satellite speakers. Even if you got your hands on a used woofer that is part of a satellite system its crossover frequency will most likely not be the same as your old system and it will sound different.

If you had originally bought separate right/left speakers and dedicated sub then you can replace components.
