Can I access an ethernet camera plugged into my router at home through the internet?

Hi. I have an ethernet camera plugged into my router at home. I want to set it up so I can access it from anywhere. I have been told you can do it by using port forwarding, is this true? Can somebody talk me through how to set it up and then how to access it through the web please?
Ok I have set it up on a specific port and have my ip address. How do I type it into the address bar?
