Can i play games on visual boy advanced without hooking up a gameboy?

i have visualboy advanced on my computer do i have 2 hook up my gameboy to play the games?

Everytime i try to play pokemon Gold or Silver it wont let me start a new game and all it says it New game and options and it wont let me play i need an answer please!!
