...it as alternative tv speakers.? ok i just got a new tv and the speaker kinda suck on it and i want to buy a home theater system with dvd or blue-ray player so i can use it as alternative speakers and get surround sound for my new tv but i want to use it without turning on the dvd or blue-ray player and keep turning it on and off each time i turn on my tv, can i do this or do i have to buy a sound bar or a Stereo shelf system?

Home theater in a box are not very dependable and they are made of poor quality. It is also not upgradable or for any expansion to the system. You can not hear any sound from your tv without turning the home theater in a box. A better choice is an Onkyo HT-S3300, it is a receiver and a set of speakers. All you need to add is a Blu Ray disc player from Panasonic, they are the most reliable player in the market today. You have to connect an optical cable from the tv to the system to hear the sound. Sound bars, no not have the same sound effect as those home theater with the speakers placed in the back or side. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

Do not buy a home theater in a box. Buy everything seperate. Buy the blu-ray seperate from the receiver and speakers. This makes it more versatile and you can do what you stated. You failed to mention how you watch TV so I will assume you have a cable box. You can connect the video cable from the cable box to the TV (HDMI, component, or composite) then connect the audio cable (red & white rca or optical) to the receiver.
