if so would the green light indicating the web cam is in use come on?
can the internet ever gain access to just your mic?

No, it can't access you, unless you click on something yourself that has some weird virus. The in use light should come on
 
oh my god yes they can do it a friend of mine knows how to do it she showed my brother I have a sticker over my webcam lol paranoid to bits over if since lol :)

I don't see how anything could gain control of your webcam without permission, unless some specific software is designed to do so.

And, most likely, you would be aware of this in the first place.
