Can you recommend a Family car to us? 2 parents + 2 young kids + 2 dogs. SUV or Van?

We are looking to buy a new car - I don't really like to go the used route so a new 2011 or 2012 (if they are out yet)

We have a 1 year old and are expecting our 2nd in Sept. We also have a lab and a little Bichon who tend to travel with us if we go on vacation or running to the groomers. Do you know of any good vehicles to check out?

If you own the vehicle yourself does it get good mileage? Would you recommend or Not recommend a car to us?

Thanks for your help! This is only the 2nd car I have bought so i'm having trouble sorting though all the different makes and models!
 
A van will generally get better MPG and have more efficient space usage than an SUV. There is an absolute hands-down best van on the market and that is the Honda Odyssey. Do not buy another van without driving the Honda but Mazda and Chrysler make a decent van as well. Avoid Toyota at all costs and don't be fooled by their ridiculous advertising.
 
The 2011 ford explorer looks like what you need style and versatility with lots of storage room or the other option that i see suiting your family best would be the 2011 toyota highlander witch is basically the same as the ford both nice looking suvs
