Car is making a loud whining noise and hard to get in gear, is gearbox going?

There is no noise when car is idling, but noise appears if i rev the engine or accelerate. The noise disappears when press the clutch in. The noise seems to be dependant on the revs because when i press the clutch, revs fall back to 1 and noise disappears.

Don't know as I drive an automatic, but if you're worried, take it to the garage - do it now, before something goes completely when you're stuck in traffic or something or you have an accident. It may be nothing, but better safe than sorry.

not gearbox..its throwout [clutch release] bearing
bearing cost 25 dollars us,,,but tranny has to be removed to replace bringing total to many hundreds,,,so you need to do this1 ignore it untill it sctualls stops working,,could take 50,000 miles
2 or replace whole clutch :as long as its apart" after you pay same labour either way,,

If the noise dissapears when press the clutch in then it is most likley the gearbox im afraid, when you press the clutch you disconnect the drive from the engine to the gearbox therefore the gears in the gearbox slow down, when the clutch is lifted you reconnect the drive in to the gearbox
