does any one know how to connect a 3com wireless router to internet?

I have been given this wireless Second hand from a friend.He insists i don t need the software because i have hp wireless to pick up signal which it does.but threre s know internet signal.I have used a adsl wire and hooked it up to the phone.it that write or do i connect it to my virgin modem which has only thEthernetnt input.please help.
