does dvd regions apply if the dvd is played via an xbox 360?

I want to send a boxset to a friend living in a different country for christmas. However i found out that it wouldnt work because its a 'region 2' dvd and he lives in region 4 so it wouldnt work on his dvd player. does this still apply if he was to play it on his xbox ? just a way of trying to get around the problem...

if not how can i get it to play for him?
 
i dont think it works im not 100% though if you cant find an answer here id try the xbox.com forums
