Does it make a difference if you connect your DVD Blue Ray to a HDMI MHL or HDMI ARC?

I have a Samsung 65 inch Smart 3D HD LED TV.
My DVD player is also a 3D Samsung Blu Ray. Instruction said to hook the DVD to the HDMI. Back of my tv says HDMI MHL or HDMI ARC. The instruction book did not specify which port.
So I have a 3D HDMI Cable and I hooked the DVD player and the TV together through the ARC port.
Threw in a Blue Ray DVD(Mission Impossible 4) and picture is great, but the sound is not as earth shattering. I had to put the volume at 25 to really hear it and my hearing is perfect since I was tested a week ago so it isn't me. When I watch my Samsung TV(news or sports), I can listen to the sound between 12-17 yet with the DVD movies, it is not as earth shattering and need to increase to 25. I even set the audio to "movie".
Do you think the port makes a difference?
Do you think I need a sound bar? If so, please recommend me types that I can sync with my cable remote. I am willing to pay up to $400.

Might be the volume the player is set to output at.

ARC would be your output to an A/V receiver, not for the player.
