DVD player plays CDs but not DVDs?

My dvd player wasn't playing DVDs at all and was no longer in use. So I pulled it out and thought it may be an easy fix like a belt came loose or something....well i was wrong. After getting the cover off, I put in a DVD to see if I could spot the problem and it turns out that the DVD will ONLY play if I give it a head start with my finger. Although, if I put a CD or Audio Disk in, it starts up right away. I plugged it into my TV to make sure the lasers were all working and, as long as I gave the DVD a head start, it worked flawlessly. I also cleaned the lense and tried multiple CDs and DVDs with consistent results. Any ideas?

this is something you should not play with as the laser light will blind you permanently.
the problem with these players is they are made as cheap as possible and alignment of the lasers is the issue the mechanism wears slightly and that's it, never to work again as it uses two lasers or two optical mirrors to read the disk.
so it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. it sounds like your is the two laser type as it can read a cd.
