DVD/VCR player shows 'RC2' when i go to play a dvd or tape?

Panasonic DMRES40V. i'm unable to use the remote at all. changed the batteries. its as if the remote is not talking to the player. the dvd won't play. the vcr plays but i can't stop, rewind, etc. i'm not sure what has happened. barely used piece of equipment. can you assist?
