Buddha is not a God. The actual man was very thin and ate very little. The custom of showing a fat Buddha came from the view that enlightenment led to material success and wealth and a position at least close to nobility. Well the Buddha was neither a god nor was he obese. Buddhist do not worship the Buddha but follow his teachings. You refer to Hotei, who is regarded as a buddha; he is a Chinese god. The term 'buddha" means "awakened one" or "enlightened one". Anyone has the potential to be a buddha.

2) He was not obese; the image you refer to is Chinese.
