How long does someone stay in jail for stealing a DVD?

Hes 21 and hes been arrested a few times, he lives in new york city and that's were he did the crime. hes my older brother. i'm 18.. My dad has also filed a report for him for taking car without permission.

i honestly don't care for him because hes a rude bother and abused me as i grew older.I didn't tell anyone because i wasn't allowed cause of my selfish parents. they didnt want him locked up which is why my dad dropped the charges.

He's not going to jail for a DVD unless he has previous convictions.

Your Dad is not doing him a favor dropping charges. Things will only get worse. Lock up your stuff.

...seems like I already answered this, but maybe not this one in particular.
This question has so much more to it than just "how long in jail...."
I feel for you. You sound very frustrated and angry. It is pretty obvious that you have been put into some situations that have hurt you and then you were pretty much told to "shut up".
As a parent, if I could tell other parents to PLEASE be careful how you handle your kids issues, I would love it. In the long run our kids will grow up, and out of certain situations....but WE, as parents, end up with the guilt.
AJ.... focus on YOUR life. Be as positive as you can. If your brother brings you down...walk away from it. If I had more time and space I would go on.
Don't focus on the negatives.
You are young and you have a lot of life and living to do.

It all depends on how much money you have for a lawyer. If he has priors and no paid lawyer he could spend a month or more in jail.
