I have a PS2 and a few extra DVD-RW discs. What file type will the PS2 recognize?

I don't have a Modchip, and I'm not going to buy one. I do not have a Gameshark, and I'm not buying one of those, either. I need to be able to do it all from my computer, without buying anything. I read that .avi will play, but it didn't work for me. I also may need a video converter that will change a video from one file type to another (not buying one of them...way too expensive)
