Is it illegal to post a picture of a license plate of a car on the internet?

i saw a car with a funny license plate so I took a picture of it, but i'm not sure if i can post it up on the internet. Is it illegal to do that?

NOTE: I took the picture in a supermarket car park, if that makes any difference

nope, my friend does this all the time. she posts all of her pictures on facebook of all the funny personalized license plates she sees just as a hobby. its not illegal.
 
There's no expectation of privacy in public (not illegal to take pictures of things in public), nor is it illegal to photograph anybody's licence plate (during accidents, just in case you forget, you've got backup).
 
It's punishable by a fine up to 2000 dollars or 5 years in prison
