Is it possible to convert a NTSC dvd player to play Region 2 (PAL) discs?I?

I've just moved from the UK to Canada and can't find a multi region home theatre system. All my DVD's are PAL/region 2, so is there any way I can change the region 1 coding on a local DVD player? If so, does it work with all players or certain makes?
