Think of the way that people make fun of various groups within cultures in an appropriate light - there are political jokes, religious jokes, subculture jokes, jokes about age, and so on and so forth. As long as they are done in good humor (in other words, they are done without the intention of truly harming the involved parties). For example, I drink wine, but not beer. But what can I do about it?; I'm Catholic.

So is making racial jokes (within the appropriate context, of course) the same as racism for the mere fact that it involves race, or is it more or less on an equal level as other types of jokes?

no. not at all. racism is a SERIOUS ISSUE. racial jokes are meant to be funny and light humor. for example. why are jews' noses so big? because air is free. its not necessarily mean or aimed to hurt a race, but just to poke fun at a stereotype of a race.

Um, I don't understand your wine analogy but I digress...

It doesn't matter what I think or how I respond to this question. What matters is what you think and what those around you think. I enjoy a racial joke every now and then but still keep an eye out for who I tell them around, just in case. Just because I'm a blonde who doesn't get offended by blonde jokes doesn't mean someone out there might not take it too seriously.

It's all a matter of subjection.

If you have to refer to the person's race then it is probably a racial stereotype. It is racist. Good humor doesn't require that kind of reference. If you really care about not hurting people avoid that kind of humor.

racial jokes, while wrong, are often based on stereotypes, so don't necessarily indicate racism. it all depends on the perception of the person telling the joke, but the joke itself doesn't equal racism as far as I'm concerned.

We've lost the capacity to laugh at ourselves, not to mention we're more racist today merely

by over advocating for certain groups vs purposely condemning others cause they don't adhere,

to popular consensus of what is politically correct according to modern day standards, even

worse and a bit dangerous i might add, now we purposely emphasize certain natural features,

or past traditions and demonize them as new standards of racism, simply put, everything you

read nowadays looks like a f**king algebraic equation, all in the effort not to offend someone . . .
